Abstract

Sexual violence against women is a public health problem that can result in medical, psychological and social consequences. Victims may suffer from post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sexual disorders and mood. Other consequences may be greater use or abuse of alcohol and drugs, health problems, reduced quality of life, satisfaction with life's commitment, with the body, with sexual activity and interpersonal relationships. There is a significant association between sexual violence and symptoms of dissociation, freezing, and hypervigilance. The relationship with the self-image, self-esteem and emotional relationships are also negatively affected, limiting the quality of life. These symptoms can be long lasting, extending for many years in the lives of these women.
