WELLMAN, HENRY M., and LEMPERS, JACQUES D. The Naturalistic Communicative Abilities of Two-Year-Olds. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1977, 48, 1$52-1057. Videotape records of the naturalistic referential communications of 2-year-olds were collected. Each communicative instance was analyzed to provide (1) a comprehensive description of the situation in which the communication occurred, (2) a description of the communicative behaviors that the communicator employed in formulating his message, (3) the response of the receiver to the message, and (4) the communicator's reaction to this feedback from the receiver. The data indicated that 2-year-olds were capable of engaging other people in communicative interaction, that they adapted their messages according to the demands of the listener and situation, and that they responded to the receiver's feedback.
