Goals have been hypothesized to mediate the relationship between incentives and performance, yet little research has explored how incentives affect the spontaneous setting of goals. The role of monetary incentives and task expe- rience as determinants of spontaneous goal setting and strategy development was examined in this study. 'Puo hundred and forty-five students worked on a class scheduling task under either a piece-rate, hourly, competitive bonus, or no-incentive condition either with or without task experience. Results showed no support for the effects of monetary incentives on spontaneous goal set- ting. Incentives and task experience affected strategy development, and strat- egy development was strongly related to performance.
