“More warlike than politique”: Shakespeare and the theatre of war – a critical survey

Abstract

This critical survey considers the evolving field of scholarship concerned with “Shakespeare and War”. It concentrates principally upon critical contributions to this area in the last 20 years, but does identify the seeds of this enquiry in the opening years of the twentieth century and views a series of publications in the 1940s as providing the bedrock for subsequent studies.
