The relationship between primary process integration (PPI) a nd achievement in second graders was investigated. Fifty-one 7-8 year olds received the Rorschach. The Rorschach was scored according to Holt's Primary Process Scoring System. Criteria of achievement were the Primary Reading Profile Test and academic grade average. The hypothesis, based on psychodynamic theory, was that PPI would be positively related to achievement. The results confirmed this hypothesis in that both PPI measures, Defense Effectiveness and Adaptive Regression, significantly related to achievement, independent of IQ. The strongest relationship was the .54 correlation between Adaptive Regression and reading (p < .001). Results indicate that PPI is an important construct in the child area and should be investigated further.
