This essay explores the reasons for the importation of western entertainment television programs into developing countries and some consequences of this well‐established practice. Questions are raised regarding the accuracy of perceptions about the United States generated by the television programs broadcast, as well as the extent to which this entertainment content affects viewers' perceptions of their own homeland. The role of the new technologies as delivery modes in developing countries is also considered as a topic for continued research.
