Examining books written by J.M.G. Le Clézio and Édouard Glissant, for the collection Peuples de l'eau at Seuil Publisher, this article analyzes how the two authors are searching for new ways to define the notion of interculturality through the concept of trace. This concept refers to the signs and voices both authors encountered during their discovery of the Pentecost and Easter Islands in the Pacific Ocean. To follow these signs and voices as traces is a way for the authors to reveal the cultural debt Western cultures owe to the memory of the inhabitants of those islands but it is also a call to use imagination and fiction in order to restore a lost and hidden meaning. This article will demonstrate how a poetics of trace helps the authors to think in a new way their relation to otherness following what Glissant calls “L'imaginaire des peuples.”
