Abstract

The conventional wisdom about buffers and negative messages needs rethinking. Textbook advice is often simplistic and frequently wrong, fostering ineffective formulas and ritualistic responses. Recent research on cognitive complexity and social perspective-taking suggests the need for more sophisticatedaudience analysis protocols for dealing with the negative message genre.
