Abstract

This historical examination focuses on the development of music in the community college curriculum from the 1910s to the 1990s. The role of music in the community college is overviewed in light of the changing focus of the community college through history. This examination reveals that the role of music has expanded in tandem with the function of the community college, and it has grown to include both community music activities and preparation for transfer to a conservatory or 4‐year institution.
