Orientating visitors within a thematic display

Abstract

This paper begins with the premise that interpretation is the key to ensuring the quality of the tourism experience and argues that successful interpretation is critical both for the effective management and conservation of built heritage sites and for sustainable tourism. The paper introduces the concept of mindfulness and outlines its use in developing a model for designing effective interpretation at built heritage sites. A supporting set of principles for this design is provided. It is argued that mindfulness is an integrating concept that can be used to enhance the quality of visitor experiences and create a sustainable link between tourism and built heritage.Visiteurs attentifs: patrimoine et tourisme. L'article commence en partant du principe que l'interprétation est la clé pour assurer la qualité de l'expérience touristique. L'article soutient qu'une interprétation réussie est nécessaire pour la gestion efficace, la conservation du patrimoine construite et le tourisme soutenable en général. On présente le concept de l'esprit attentionné et propose une façon d'appliquer ce concept pour élaborer une interprétation efficace aux sites patrimoniaux construits. L'article présente un ensemble de principes pour l'élaboration de ce genre d'interprétation. On soutient que l'esprit intentionné représente un concept unifiant qu'on peut utiliser pur rehausser la qualité de l'expérience touristique et créer un lien soutenable entre le tourisme et le patrimoine construit.
