For a long time, I haven't read an ELT-related book with such emotional reactions. One moment I caught myself smiling at the good-humoured self-mockery of one author, and another moment I wouldn't be able to control my tears; and the frustrations of another author would bring forth my own growing pains as I matured from an EFL learner to a teacher, teacher trainer, and researcher. Reading old friends such as George Braine, An E He, and Antonia Chandrasegaran talking about their own experiences is like hearing them over a beer. Reading colleagues from a place I have never been to is like meeting new friends in a staff room over a cup of coffee. Every story is told with emotion, and is received with warmth, because non-native speaker (NNS) professionals in our field can easily identify themselves in many of these stories. For NNS English language teachers around the world who are looking for a voice, this book is a song that's guaranteed to strike a chord in their hearts.
