For over 20 years, conservation has had a central role in the development of rescue archaeology in York, UK. Changes in attitudes to and funding of archaeology have greatly influenced the conservation strategy adopted. The overall systematization of archaeological project management has confirmed the need for conservators to be involved at all stages of the project, and has reinforced the place of conservation as a part of finds research and not just as a service. In addition, a strategy of problem-oriented conservation has been developed with the aim of providing maximum information with minimum intervention.
