Aging and Gerontology Research Retirement, Disability, and Employment Health, Education, and Aging

Abstract

Gerontology is developing as a semi- or new profession. A random sample of the membership of two professional societies supported this development, however, enthusiasm for this position varied with the level of educational attainment of the respondent. Those with graduate degrees generally preferred gerontology as a specialization within a traditional profession or discipline. The future development of gerontology will depend upon the role its leadership assumes in responding to the interests of its rank and file membership.
