If God's voice speaking to us through his word, in particular as recorded in the Bible, and God's voice speaking to us through his work, as interpreted by scientists, are no longer heard as consonant (if at all), there is a problem: What to believe? Experience shows ‐‐ although this is changing ‐‐ that more often than not, young people are left to their own devices to answer that question. After recalling old and new evidence from Germany, and presenting some theoretical considerations, particular features of the current situation will be abstracted from recent studies. Next, three cases from a longitudinal study in Switzerland will be discussed. Finally, a few suggestions will be made as to how the task of young people could be facilitated by a different religious education.
