Shopping centres originated in the USA during the 1950s and grew at a phenomenal rate before extending their success, admittedly at a slower pace, all over the world. By looking at the particular features of shopping malls in each country, especially in relation to the socio-economic characteristics of the population, this paper sets out to make a comparative analysis of studies already made in Brazil and Spain on this modern phenomenon, using as a starting point the experiences in the USA. The authors compile the models and parameters used in studies of shopping centres in Brazil and Spain with reference to the generation of trips made to them and modal choices, while they also provide general information on the classification and number of shopping centres found in these particular countries. In this way a comparative overview is presented which provides the context for more detailed national and cross-cultural studies.
