At the moment when a cultural history of modem Europe appears through different ways and varions purposes, the question of the place of museums in this analysis is not yet resolved. The author suggests a general review of the social sciences perspectives on this new topic. First the history of museums is part of a social history of things (which includes commodities, symbols, etc.) as well as of history of collective memory, places and objects. Second, the modem museum is the representation ofthe cultural heritage with alil the consequences from the national or ethnic point of view. Eventually, the social meaning of museums depends upon the environment they provide, and the reception, by an audience, of their values and messages.
