As freight volumes are expected to increase in Europe once the financial crisis ends, the author of this paper suggests considering freight transport (road, rail, and inland waterways) as a portfolio that can maximize reliability levels given certain costs. He compares this system to equity portfolio management. In this paper, the author describes freight transport modes in Europe, the reliability of freight transport output, such as the SERVQUAL model, the concept of portfolio management, and performance and measurement of a freight transport portfolio. He suggests a freight transport portfolio can help businesses by providing better insight into the reliability of origin-destination combinations, both for shippers and freight transport service providers. He notes there are considerable opportunities for further research, and suggests that a freight transport portfolio management offers shippers the chance to evaluate their transport services based on reliability.
