The aim of this article is to examine the general pattern of Europeanization in Greece. ‘Europeanization’ is seen here as a process that is transforming the domestic political system in the direction of weakening the position of central state institutions, while strengthening decentralization and civil society. Europeanization is to be understood as a process that is experienced differently by member states and applicants, affected by a range of factors connected to the state, policy-making and political culture, as well as by how a state views EU membership. Greece, like other south European states, has embarked on a process of ‘intended’, rather than ‘responsive’, Europeanization.
