The extent to which adolescents reflect upon processes of change is considered in relation to intellectual development especially in terms of the change from ‘describer to ‘explainer’ thinking. Essays discussing the influence of change upon the lives of English and Papua‐New Guinean adolescents aged between 11 and 17 years were obtained and analysed. Evidence indicating a growing sensitivity to, and understanding of, the stability‐change‐stability cycle is presented. Younger adolescents saw change in relation to their own lives as immediate and direct and occupying a short span of time. As age increased so did the ability to view change comprehensively within an extended temporal perspective.
