This study explored the relationships among visual and auditory perception, academic aptitude, sex, and school achievement. The participants were first-grade children from an east central Indiana public school district. The data were treated by canonical and multiple regression analysis. Results of the study indicate that visual perception added significantly to the prediction of achievement beyond that available through knowledge of a participant's sex and academic aptitude. When added as a fourth variable, auditory perception did not make a significant contribution to predictive ability of any of the three criterion measures. The results of this study also suggest that different variables might be considered when predicting achievement for boys than for girls.
