In a recent article in the AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST, George Foster proposed that a principle accounting for much of the behavior of people in peasant societies is a cognitive orientation that “Good” is limited and unexpandable. The present paper is concerned with showing that the assumptions of this model are untenable and that interpretations deriving from it are therefore erroneous. The debate points up some of the difficulties in generalizing about peasant societies and some of the theoretical problems needing attention by anthropologists.
