Rather than treating diaspora as defined by certain criteria across the ages, we argue that further investigation of diasporic practices and orientations provide a meaningful analysis of how individuals create and maintain connections to an ancestral and distant « homeland ». Based on two parallel and methodologically complementary studies about vacation practices of Moroccan- and Algerian-origin « second generation » individuals in Europe towards their North African « homelands », our combined data provide a view into how such practices become part of an enactment of diasporic belonging – both to the « homeland » and to broader definitions and senses of diaspora. The sense of belonging they express through choosing to visit the diasporic homeland is complicated by familial attachment and detachment, as well as tendencies towards other attachments that reach beyond the borders of their ancestral countries.
