Abstract The Royal Society is celebrating 350 years of its Fellowship in 2010. In reviewing the Society's activities during the twentieth century, the admission of women for the first time was a key development. Understanding the characteristics of those women who have achieved election may help in the design of policies to increase their number further in future.
