The concurrent validity of 4 of the new content scales of the MMPI-2 was evaluated in samples of college students from the United States (n = 271) and Australia (n = 208). Utilizing an incremental validity evaluative strategy, the MMPI-2 content scales designed to assess symptoms of Anxiety (ANX), Depression (DEP), Low Self-Esteem (LSE), and Anger (ANG) were examined. The results argue strongly for the concurrent validity of these new content scales and their ability to provide valid information beyond that provided by more traditional MMPI-2 clinical and validity indices. Further, descriptive data revealed very similar average validity-, clinical-, and content-scale profiles for U.S. and Australian participants, with several substantial elevations when compared to revised adult norms for the MMPI-2. In particular, scores on F, Pt, Sc, and Ma were elevated by about 5 T-score points or more. Further analysis suggested that these elevations were primarily the function of the (young) age of most of the college students who served as participants.
