Linear enamel hypoplasia, caries, and wear/attrition are the most commonly studied pathologies afflicting the gnathic complex. There are, however, hundreds of lesser-known diseases and disorders of the teeth and jaws; a few of these occur at high enough frequencies that an understanding of how they manifest is important, as they are likely to be encountered in studies of prehistoric and historic human remains. In this chapter some of the more important anomalies of tooth position and number, disorders impacting alveolar bone, and conditions that affect the tooth crown and roots are described and discussed.
