This chapter focuses on the issue of knowledge sharing through a collective action framework and identifies two possible solutions to the sharing problem: the use of agency and the nurturing of a communal resource. The role played by a community in explaining why people share knowledge in organizations is examined and a brief review of some of the key literature on communities within and outside the organizational context is presented. A discussion on how diverse and distributed interests may influence knowledge sharing in communities is also presented. Assuming that organizations are populated by people with dynamic rather than static interests, the chapter examines how opportunity structures and the social norms of care and authenticity could have a positive impact on knowledge sharing.
