Wahabisme began to flourish in Bamako in 1945 following the return of the first West African graduates of the University Al-Azhar in Cairo, and the increase in pilgrimages to Mecca. Until recent years, its reach was almost exclusively limited to Bamako's merchant class. As a matter of fact, because of its anti-clerical and bourgeois position, on the one hand, and its nationalist and pro-arab stance on the other, it met the expectations of this class very well. In addition, it provided the children of the merchants with a modern style of teaching which was delivered in arabic and was fell would be useful in professional life. Having led the nationalist fight on the side of the R.D.A., it was rapidly excluded as an autonomous Islamic organization by the socialist regime of Modibo Keita and, after a brief renaissance, by the military regime of Moussa Traoré. Today it is essentially a bourgeois movement although it reaches a large number of underprivileged urban youth because of its strict religious nature. A t the moment, it is expanding beyond the merchant community and is reaching into all stratas of Malien society.
