Paintings exposed to vibration or impact due to handling and transportation are often considered to be at risk for damage. This study examines some of the mechanical properties of typical artist materials under different environmental conditions and using that information, conducts a computer based analysis of representative paintings subjected to impact and vibration. The findings of the study indicate that paintings have a substantial intrinsic dynamic strength and that within reasonable limits the objects are generally able to withstand considerable sustained vibration as well as rather serious impact. Some conditions that merit special attention are examined.
