In this essay I present the oral tradition of origin for one matri-clan among the Kaguru of east-central Tanzania. In the first section I discuss some of the difficulties faced by those who attempt to transform the data of oral tradition into academic history. In the second section I present the original Kaguru text, explaining some of its details by means of footnotes. I provide only an English translation, but include in brackets those original Kaguru terms which seem important or particularly difficult to translate. In the third section I try to use my analysis of the Kaguru material presented here in order to illustrate the argument outlined in the first section.
