This paper reports the findings of a longitudinal study investigating the expectations, perceptions and preferences of hospitality students concerning the workplace environment. The Work Environment Scale (Moos, 1994) was used to determine and compare the attitudes of students in the 1994 and 2000 courses. The results showed evidence of some unmet expectations and found that whereas the 1994 students were dissatisfied with the realities of the hospitality workplace, the year 2000 students presented a more accepting attitude. The results bring into question the adequacy of expectation data alone as a measure of attitudes.
