This paper gives details about a study into the evaluation of tourism teaching in higher education. Although there has been a rapid growth in research related to tourism education, little of this has focused on teaching or its assessment. The work draws on the literature from the field of education more generally in order to arrive at a set of dimensions to evaluate teaching in tourism. Based on these dimensions it then explains an empirical study conducted in the UK using Q-sort methodology and two questionnaire surveys of teachers and students. Findings from the student groups suggest that the important dimensions relate to the extent to which the teaching is linked both to the industry specific aspects of tourism as well as to deeper sets of experiences associated with higher education.
