Hospitality graduates: Course expectations and career destinations

Abstract

This paper examines both the educational and career expectations of a group of Catering and Hotel students. In so doing, the paper compares Australian student experiences and expectations with those of their overseas counterparts. A major component of the study also examines the career directions of the cohort, again comparing these students with overseas Catering and Hotel graduates, as well as to Australian graduates from vocationally orientated courses. Our findings confirm those of the overseas experience, namely that there is a high attrition rate of Catering and Hotel students from the hospitality industry and the paper examines why this is so.
