A Land Information System (LIS) has the ability to provide current and easily accessible data; however very little has been mentioned about the treatment of non-current data (which may possess archival value) created during the updating process. The societal need for these records can be considerable and many countries have enacted legislation to prevent unauthorised destruction of public records—such as those stored in many LIS's. Archiving machine-readable data has several unique problems associated with it and special procedures must be adopted if storage media, and the data contained within them, are to last more than a few years. This paper offers some suggestions for solving the many difficulties involved in archiving data in a LIS, but its main purpose is to draw attention to the subject before LIS's advance further.
