This article analyzes the symbolic economy that infuses the commercial economy of a “floating pilgrimage” around the monastery of Mount Athos, in Northern Greece. Licences, delivered only to male candidates, are necessary in order to gain access to the sacred peninsula. For women, the only possibility to catch a glimpse of the peninsula is to take part in a “floating” pilgrimage. A boat follows the coast of Mount Athos and stops in front of the monastry, while monks joins the pilgrims in a small boat. The article focuses in particular on the boundaries between the sacred and the economic dimensions of the religious souvenirs sold by the monks during this floating pilgrimage.
