Ss were 22 male and 23 female paid scudent volunteers from the Universiry of Maryland. Each S worked on 3 0 scrambled words, one at time for 1 min. each; 1 5 Ss had all 4-letter words; 15 Ss had all 7-letter words, and 1 5 Ss had all 10-letter words. At the end of the experiment each S rated his personal satisfaction on bipolar, graphic scale anchored by the statements, a great deal of dissatisfaction and a grear deal of satisfaction. Each S also filled out two graphic scales to indicate liking for the task (anchors were like(d) it very much and dislike(d) it very much). The first (before scale) was filled out after S worked on 8 practice words of varying lengths but before the experimental words; the second (after scale) was given at the end of the experiment.
