Abstract This article focuses on the life of Ur-Utu, the chief dirge singer or lamenter of the goddess Annunitum and one of the most prominent citizens of Sippar-Amnanum. Ur-Utu's house, which was excavated by the Belgian Archaeological Mission to Iraq under the direction of Leon De Meyer and Hermann Gasche, contained 2,500 tablets which were the largest private Old Babylonian archive ever found. These tablets provide information on Ur-Utu's education, his interests and his aspirations.
