Stepparent Stress

Abstract

This paper reviews the literature on parenting stresses facing stepparents. After describing the unique stressors stepparents encounter and reviewing finding that suggest that they experience slightly lower levels of overall adjustment than do parents in intact families, the role cognitions play in causing stepparent stress is examine. A number of different types of cognitions, generated from societal, familial, and individual sources, affect the level of stepparent stress. Methodological limitations and future directions for research into the relation between cognitions and stepparent adjustment are discussed.
