Prestige and power do not always hold hands. This study about language attitudes in Merida and Maracaibo shows how speakers of these cities do not value positively the dialect of the capital, Caracas. As a result of an survey it was found that in rational issues the speakers of both regions prefer the dialect spoken in Merida, whereas in emotional issues, each prefers their own dialect over the dialect of Caracas. The opinions of the citizens of Merida and Maracaibo seem to be oriented by their old historical relationships than by there actual political ones.
