The present article examines the integration of neuropsychological (NP) methods into the comprehensive assessment of preschool age children. Literature is reviewed which has reported that the measurement of sensory and motor abilities broadens the functional base for anticipating social and cognitive skill development. Also discussed is the practical and theoretical relevance of the assessment of motor abnormalities in infancy for understanding the relationship between brain function and a broad range of behaviors in early childhood. It is concluded that NP assessment serves as a powerful tool for individual case planning only when used in combination with information gathered in other settings.
