Computer‐Based Testing and the Internet

Abstract

This chapter will outline the ways in which computer technology can be used in selection. In so doing, it will take a broad view of the literature and current practice to consider not just what is being done but also what could and, no doubt, will be done in the future. Thus we will also look at some work in areas outside of selection: for example, educational testing and assessment for licensing and certification, where these provide insights into how selection practices may change. It is not the intention of this chapter to provide an exhaustive review of the literature on computer-based testing (CBT) and the Internet; rather it will attempt to illustrate how these technologies are being used in selection and how they could be used. In particular, it will focus on practice issues arising from the application of these technologies.
