This chapter investigates potential threats to the validity of Brinley plotting. There is little evidence that speed-accuracy trade-offs play the major role in explaining age-related slowing. Fitting the data using the EZ diffusion model suggested that age is associated with differences in all three parameters—older adults are slower at reaching decisions, set more conservative boundaries (but only for spatial tasks, not for linguistic tasks), and have longer non-decision times than younger adults. The dissociation between linguistic and spatial tasks was replicated in the EZ diffusion analysis. Variability in response times was identical for younger and older adults once the effect of mean RT was removed. There was no evidence of non-linearity in the data. Unreliability does not appear to bias the estimate of the average slope. Age and level of education within the older-adult groups in the meta-analysis had no influence on the slope estimates.
