This chapter emphasizes the social nature of newcomer innovation in work teams, focusing on the reciprocal roles that newcomers and oldtimers play in producing innovation. The analysis was based on the assumption that innovation cannot occur without implicit or explicit negotiation between newcomers, who suggest new ways of performing team tasks, and oldtimers, who accept these suggestions. It discusses a number of variables which are likely to influence this negotiation process, some associated with newcomers, and others associated with the teams to which they belong.
