Introduction

Abstract

This introductory chapter provides an overview of key concepts and issues in bilingual and multilingual education discussed in the book The Handbook of Bilingual and Multilingual Education and its chapters. The book discusses the theoretical foundations and presents bilingual and multilingual education as a current, strong, and cutting-edge field. It provides a broad overview of the historical development and current status of the field. The book also provides vivid critical examples of policy and practice in action. It moves the field forward by rethinking older constructs and introducing fresh ideas that better reflect and address the reality of our multilingual, multicultural, and increasingly globalized world. The book provides case studies of, or draws examples from, specific countries and regions from all continents of the earth except Antarctica.
