The time period from 1500 AD to 1700 AD when the earliest "contacts" took place between Amerindians and Europeans in eastern Canada demands special absolute and relative dating techniques to establish the contemporaneity of artifacts and sites. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) of 500 copper-based artifacts from archaeological sites in Québec and Ontario has resulted in a database of 8 elements that allows us to assess the degree of homogeneity of these artifacts at the intra-site level as a means of establishing which parts of a site may be contemporaneous. The analytical data are also used in inter-site comparisons in an attempt to establish the chronology of the trading actions that link them.
