Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses a theoretical approach to the study of sexual lives that takes history, discourse, and culture seriously. Central to this perspective is the idea of narrative engagement. It is argued that an approach that links the ideas of life course and narrative provides a paradigm for the study of sexual lives that maximizes the consideration of the contextual basis of human development. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
