This chapter covers the publication of scientific content in periodical publications, ranging from scholarly journals to newspapers and magazines, from the late seventeenth century to the twentieth century. It starts with a chronological survey, paying attention to internationalism, commercial concerns, the role of learned societies, and the creation of bibliographic tools for searching the ever-expanding literature. The second half of the chapter reflects on changing trends in the meaning and function of scientific authorship; the development of processes of editing, evaluation and peer review; and methods of distribution and circulation of journals.
