Schools are playing an increasing role in identifying and treating mental health problems. This chapter addresses the role and scope of practice of the art therapist in the school milieu, and identifies how to provide therapeutic support within a system that was not originally established to do so. Over the last 25 years, there has been a steady decline in the availability of mental health services for US children and adolescents. The goal of school art therapy has been to assist the student to manage social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral barriers, which impede the ability to successfully access educational opportunities. As an art therapist approaches a particular school or school system, he or she would benefit from conducting preliminary research and formulating a plan that focuses on which department/population has the best opportunity for success.
