In this paper, we advance an analytical model for pan-Latino identity formation. We argue that because of the unbounded nature of Latino as an analytical concept, the term has come to mean everything and anything in the popular discourse. Using two processes that foster Latino identity formation in the U.S. (e.g., racialization and identity formation) we identify four analytical categories. The four analytical categories move us beyond a simplistic conceptual apparatus that conflates the folk and analytical meanings of Latino. We argue that the four heuristic categories provide a conceptual framework that more accurately captures the experience and dimensions of Latino identity and solidarity in the U.S.
