Since the mid 1960s retail change in British cities has proceeded at a prodigious rate. The development of decentralised superstores, hypermarkets and retail warehouses has been followed by the recent emergence of retail parks and pressures for regional out-of-town shopping centres. These have been the most obvious expressions of change. However, central area redevelopment, the refurbishment of traditional district centres, and the decline of older centres and small shops have also been important elements in the process of adjustment. Within the context of a case study of Greater Swansea, this paper examines the evidence for a “retail revolution” having occurred and discusses the urban planning implications of retail change.
