In translation studies, electroencephalography (EEG) technology is used to gain insight into which brain regions are involved in certain translation or interpreting tasks. This can, in turn, be related to typical translation patterns as they are suggested for translation universals. Therefore, this chapter correlates translation universals to cognitive processes. Prototypical translation patterns such as explicitation and simplification, but also the continuum between normalization and shining-through, have so far been tested with parallel and comparable translation corpora. The chapter then introduces EEG studies relevant for translation and attempts to reinterpret the EEG findings against the background of translation universals. Nevertheless, it should be emphasized that EEG-related research into the translation process cannot yet satisfy the requirements necessary to draw conclusions for translation didactics or even practice. It should rather be regarded as basic research, revealing new insight into conscious and unconscious language perception and production processes during translation.
